Constitution for Scotland

The first meeting of the Constitution Group took place on 10th August 2021. (Some research had already been done by members. Solicitor Catriona Walker wrote a paper on the relationship between church and state in Scotland, following the Judicial Review against the Scottish Government in March 2021).  As well as the CFI members of the Group, it was attended by constitution expert Dr Elliot Bulmer.  A further meeting took place in September, also with Dr Bulmer.

Our group has agreed with Dr Bulmer that an interim constitution should be drawn up before an independence referendum, and that it should be as uncontroversial as possible, in order for it to be acceptable to a majority of people. An assembly or convention should be established after independence in order to write a final constitution, which will deal fully with topics including the place of the Church and of religion.
